Mental Health Speaker — Wigan
A Wigan-based mental health speaker delivering keynotes, workshops and MHFA training to organisations across Wigan, Greater Manchester and the wider UK.
Based in Wigan
Danny Sculthorpe is from Wigan. He played his rugby here, built his life here, and hit rock bottom here. He also came back here — and has spent the last 15 years helping organisations across Wigan and the North West have the conversations that save lives.
As a former Wigan Warriors player, Danny carries an authority in this town that no outside speaker can replicate. When he walks into a room in Wigan — a construction site, a school hall, a corporate boardroom — people know who he is and they listen differently because of it.
He is a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor, a keynote speaker and an advocate who has addressed audiences from 10 to 10,000. He delivers across the full range of mental health services — from a powerful 45-minute keynote to a full two-day MHFA qualification programme.
For Wigan organisations, booking Danny isn't just booking a speaker. It's booking someone who genuinely understands this town, its people and the pressures they face every day.
"If I hadn't spoken to my wife and parents that day, I wouldn't be here. Talking saved my life."

Find Out MoreFrom Wigan
Danny Sculthorpe is based in Wigan. He played for Wigan Warriors — one of the most storied clubs in rugby league — before his career took him to Castleford, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Widnes. He earned eight caps for England and captained the tour to South Africa.
When injury ended his career in 2010, he came back to Wigan. And it was here — in this town — that he reached the lowest point of his life. In a car park, with pills and alcohol, ready to end everything. A phone call to his wife and parents brought him back.
That story — told honestly, without performance or polish — is what he brings to Wigan businesses, schools and organisations every week. He knows this town. He knows its people. He knows the pressures that come with working in construction, logistics, sport and public services here.
That local credibility is something no outside speaker can replicate. And it is why Danny's sessions in Wigan hit differently.
"We were privileged to welcome Danny Sculthorpe, who shared his personal journey with honesty and real impact. His message around resilience, mental fitness and looking after one another truly resonated across the room and sparked some powerful conversations."
