The Basics, Explained

What is Mental Health
First Aid?

Everyone knows what a first aider does for a broken arm. Fewer know there's an equivalent for mental health. Here's what Mental Health First Aid actually is — in plain English.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help you give to someone who is experiencing a mental health issue or crisis, until appropriate professional support is found or the crisis passes. It's the mental-health equivalent of physical first aid: you're not there to diagnose or cure, you're there to notice, support, and get the person to the right help safely.

A trained Mental Health First Aider is an ordinary colleague — not a clinician — who has learned to spot the early signs that someone may be struggling, start a supportive and non-judgemental conversation, offer reassurance and information, and encourage that person towards professional help and other support. In a workplace, they become a trusted, approachable first point of contact, and a key part of a wider culture that takes mental health seriously.

The skills are taught through a simple action plan that first aiders learn to follow in the moment — approach and assess, listen without judgement, give support and information, and encourage both professional help and other support. It's practical, memorable, and something anyone can learn. If you'd like your people trained, Danny Sculthorpe delivers MHFA training across the UK.

The Action Plan

How a first aider helps.

A

Approach & assess

Approach the person, assess the situation and look for any risk of harm. Choose a suitable time and place to talk.

L

Listen without judgement

Listen and communicate non-judgementally. Often, being genuinely heard is the most powerful support of all.

G

Give support & information

Offer reassurance and practical information — without trying to diagnose or "fix" the person.

E

Encourage professional help

Gently encourage the person towards appropriate professional support, such as their GP, an EAP or a helpline.

E

Encourage other support

Encourage other supports too — trusted friends, family, colleagues and self-help strategies.

Common Questions

Mental Health First Aid — FAQs.

What does a Mental Health First Aider do?

They notice when someone may be struggling, start a supportive, non-judgemental conversation, offer reassurance and information, and encourage the person towards professional help and other support. They're not a therapist — they're a trained, approachable first point of contact.

How long does mental health first aid certification last?

MHFA certification is typically valid for three years, after which a refresher is recommended to renew it and keep skills current.

Is mental health first aid training worth it?

Yes — for the cost of a short course you gain trained people who can spot problems early, support colleagues and potentially save a life. With mental ill health a leading cause of workplace absence, it's one of the most practical wellbeing investments an employer can make.

Who should do mental health first aid training?

Anyone can benefit, but it's especially valuable for managers, HR, health and safety staff, team leaders and volunteers — anyone likely to be a first point of contact for someone who's struggling.
